Energy costs represent a
significant expense item for most commercial and
industrial buildings. As buildings age, the equipment for
many energy-consuming systems (lighting, HVAC, etc.)
becomes prohibitively expensive to operate and it is
beneficial for building owners to invest in newer
technologies and benefit from an attractive return on
investment. A substantial portion of these retrofit
projects either never achieve the projected savings or
fail to sustain initial savings due to ineffective
processes for monitoring and verifying energy savings. The prevailing view in the industry has been that the costs of M&V are prohibitive and many projects are implemented without an adequate M&V provision that inevitably leads to a lower return on investment. Implementing effective, timely measurement and verification not only ensures that installation and setup are done correctly, but also provides continuous feedback on the long term success of the energy retrofit. |
